A house with a story
This stone cottage was built in 1941, during the Second World War. It was the birthplace of my grandmother and her three brothers.
A family of six lived here: two parents and four children. The house was small, as was common for families at that time.
Wooden furniture, boxes, a cradle and beds once filled the house. Almost everything was made of wood because the house is surrounded by forests. We later renewed the interior but kept original features, among them the living-room table.
Slovenian homes are closely linked to their surroundings, so their architecture changes from region to region. This stone house is typical of Babno Polje and its region.
The stone exterior is from 1941. It still keeps its original shape.
Babno Polje is known as the Slovenian Siberia. A temperature of −34.5 °C was recorded here in 1956; unofficial reports say it reached −39.6 °C.
Fireplaces are important here and keep homes warm during harsh winters. The large green fireplace in the living room is not original, but it is typical for houses in this area.

Babno Polje sits in the Loška dolina valley, on the high Notranjska karst of southern Slovenia – surrounded by forests, meadows and cave country. Quiet, clean, far from the crowds: yet Snežnik, Lake Cerknica and the sea are all a short drive away.
